First Certified product for NaturePositive+ and nature repair – is going to be an Animal Nest Haven.

A home for wild birds and mammals to raise their young is set to become the first product emerging from Global GreenTag’s new NaturePositive+ Declaration program.

Global GreenTag International announced the first product assessed under its new NaturePositive+ Standard™ and Product Transparency Declaration program is a nesting box from Victoria with a very special story.

In Melbourne today, Global GreenTag International, the Australian based certification company, announced the start of a new frontier in product certification with the launch of its NaturePositive+ Standard and NaturePositive+ Declaration program at Circularity 2023. It was the story of a humble nest box that painted the vision of what a nature positive product can bring to the future. A product encompassing circular resources resulting in giving back to nature.

Unveiling their first product undergoing assessment within the new NaturePositive+ program by Victorian manufacturer Bird Habitats, Global GreenTag said: “Thermal Haven Nest Boxes have emerged as a beautiful example of a product declared under the NaturePositive+ Standard.”

David Baggs, CEO and Technical Director of Global GreenTag International, presented the new standard to an audience of circular economy and climate repair specialists, said:

“Thermal Haven Nest Boxes is not just a product, it’s an environmental and social project.”

One of its many benefits, includes the use of completely non-toxic waste materials from existing manufacturing processes, however, the best part is that it is already working to support the lives and continuation of species of wild birds and mammals in pockets of Australia where it is being trialled – assisting species whose natural habitats have been decimated by the encroachment of urban development and natural disasters. It uses world leading thermal design concepts to deliver a constructed bird and mammal habitat box that mimics the thermal performance of natural log hollows. The product recently won the "Landscape and Urban" Best Product Category Award at the Sustainability Awards.

The Thermal Haven Nest Box project is dedicated to the memory of an avid bird-lover, then 8-year-old Rose McMahon by her parents Chris and Kat McMahan of The Rose Foundation. Completely unintended, it eventuated the product was certified on the very day that Rose would have turned 10. Global GreenTag Co-founders David Baggs and Mary-Lou Kelly decided it was such a significant synchronicity that the NaturePositive+ Standard should also be dedicated to Rose’s memory, and so it has been.

David said that “Thermal Haven Nest Boxes are a brilliant example of bringing that biodiversity forward several generations, so we can bring holistic biodiversity repair back into those forest ecosystem restoration processes that we are focusing on and generating with the NaturePositive+ program.”

The focus on biodiversity, he added, is one of the primary cornerstones of GreenTag’s NaturePositve+ Standard, alongside 8 other metrics and criteria that the Declaration process investigates and quantifies. “Biodiversity needs to be honoured because of its importance in nature and climate repair. A healthy ecosystem generates carbon sink potential not only above ground in trees, but also permanently within soil, wetlands and reefs. In turn, this enables climate repair by drawing carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, not just deferring new emissions going into the atmosphere and that’s an important distinction. Products that are NaturePositive+ draw down more carbon dioxide than it took to make them, hence repairing the climate.”

The new NaturePositive+ Standard and product declaration program will be demanding but the program enables a careful step by step process of improvement for all products submitted – the goal is for all products to become nature positive and the benefits for nature repair and regeneration, can only portend a better future for everyone and everything.
