Consumer concern for product transparency is a significant problem for the built environment industries but Global GreenTag International is set to present the market with a solution.

GreenTag Certifiers Ready to Roll With New GHS Requirements

Major changes to OH&S requirements are here and GreenTag is ready for the legislative requirements that have been introduced in Australia with  respect to the new legislative requirement for classification and labelling of chemicals under the  Globally Harmonised System (GHS) originally developed by the United Nations.

The use of the GHS is now mandatory from  January 1st, 2017, having been announced in 2012 by the Safe Work Australia and introduced into Global GreenTag Standards commencing also in 2012 and has consequently played some small part in helping to establish the use of GHS in the market since – just  as it also has in the development and growth of LCA  (Life Cycle Assessment),   EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations) and a soon to be announced new declaration, currently under wraps.

In terms of chemical classification and labelling under the new look GHS, GreenTag is ready.

GreenTag  product assessment procedures are aligned to the new system, which  applies to all workplace hazardous chemicals in NSW, ACT, QLD, SA, TAS, NT and Commonwealth systems under the GHS and the Model Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulations and their Hazardous Substances Information System.

GreenTag  product assessors, whose job is to rate products with careful consideration of any chemical risks in products under certification, gladly welcome  the new GHS system – for its clarity and opportunity to increase demands for transparency and greater product disclosure.

The new GHS system provides enhanced  criteria by which to classify hazards, including  risk of hazards pertaining to human health, such as carcinogenicity, risks to the  environment , such as toxic  release  to waterways and of course physical hazards – a pertinent category, especially in light of the urgent need in recent years in the Australian building industry that has seen a number of fire outbreaks, due in part to flammability in the  chemical components in sub-par and uncertified materials.

Under the GHS new system, all manufacturers, importers, suppliers and users of hazardous chemicals will be required to observe legislative requirements  to manage the risks associated with hazardous chemicals in the workplace.  This will include  ensuring the safe use, handling and storage of chemicals, as well as specific duties under the model Work Health and Safety Regulations.

Hazard Descriptions

In plain text contexts, the GHS uses the words ‘Danger’ and ‘Warning’ as signals to indicate the relative level of severity of a hazard. ‘Danger’ being used for more severe or significant hazards, with ‘Warning’ being used for less severe hazards.

Hazard and Precautionary Statements

Hazard Statements are assigned to a class and category that describes the nature of the hazards of a substance, including where appropriate, the degree of hazard, e.g. the hazard statement ’Toxic if swallowed’ is the Hazard Statement for Acute Toxicity category 3 (Oral).

Precautionary Statements describe the recommended measures that should be taken to minimise or prevent adverse effects resulting from exposure, or improper storage or handling of a hazardous chemical. The GHS precautionary statements cover prevention, response, storage and disposal.

Hazard and precautionary statements replace the ‘Risk’ and ‘Safety’ phrases required under previous laws.

GreenTag Certified Weathertex Voted #1 Most Trusted Brand in Australia!

Weathertex has taken FIRST PLACE in Architecture & Design’s annual Top Trusted Brands readers’ survey for 2016. The much anticipated poll reveals Australia’s 100 best brands in the architecture, building, construction and design industries.

The GreenTag certified Australian company came out on top from 341 nominated brands and a total of 13,456 votes as Australia’s favourite building product brand.

GreenTag also made it into the top 100 trusted brands along with twenty three other nominated GreenTag related brands.

“Green certification is certainly making an impact, “ says David Baggs, GreenTag’s CEO.  “We are thrilled for Weathertex’s result and also that 24% of all products in  the Top 100 are GreenTag clients.  Not to mention our own improved performance and presence as the only Product Certification Program in this year’s Top 100 most trusted brands.   You can’t beat #1 position, however, and Weathertex, which achieved a GreenTag Platinum certified status in 2016 as well,  most definitely deserves this level of recognition by the industry.”

The 2016 survey revealed the common themes associated with a trusted brand, includes great service, products and reliability – as well as other socially driven themes of eco-friendliness and Australian made.

Meet the NAC: Mark Thomson of the Australian Green Development Forum (AGDF)

GreenTag’s commitment to supporting a healthier built environment is long established in Australia and globally.  We have regular contact with eminent industry exponents of sustainable building design and one of those professionals is Mark Thomson, President of the Australian Green Development Forum (AGDF) a non-profit coalition endorsed by industry and environmental bodies.

Mark is a valued member of GreenTag’s National Advisory Committee (NAC) for Building Products with a passion for creating healthy working and living environments.  He is an Ecological Architect and Sustainability Consultant, with a national reputation for the practical implementation of Ecologically Sustainable Development.

In 2016 Mark judged the Queensland Premiers Sustainability Awards and since 2015 been a judge of the Australian Banksia Sustainability Awards. He was an Expert Panel member in the international Katerva Awards in 2013, recognised as the Nobel Prize in Sustainability. In 2007, he co-authored the book “The Environmental Brief – Pathways to Green Design”, which was published in London.

In addition to his roles with the Australian Green Development Forum and his advisory role with GreenTag, Mark is also a faculty member of the Green Building Council of Australia, the Queensland Representative of the Banksia Foundation and an Earthcheck Accredited Professional.

Global GreenTag is pleased to announce that interior fitout products already certified in Australia can easily be converted to meet the Green Star SA Interiors Tool requirements set out by the Green Building Council of South Africa.

Global GreenTag GreenRate and LCARate certification has been recognised by the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) as a product certification standard for the Materials Fit out Calculator in Green Star SA Interiors Rating Tool. It does however require an interpretive evaluation against the GBCSA recognition criteria and issuing of a separate GBCSA Rating certificate.

The GreenTag GBCSA Rating certificates are recognised for certifying interiors fitout, consisting of four categories: Furniture, Assemblies, Flooring and Wall Coverings.

Breaking Through Green Product Market Barriers –Workshop with Sustainable Brands Sydney 2016

Global GreenTag is presenting a workshop in Sydney next week to unpack the barriers standing in the way of green products having a greater traction in the marketplace – and exploring with participants solutions to overcome the conundrum.

“Enhanced ecolabelling can make all the difference,” says David Baggs, presenting the interactive session at the Sustainable Brands 2016 workshop on Wednesday June 29.

Participants who join the workshop will be encouraged to share their current experiences and barriers in accessing key green markets and ways to overcome them.

According to Baggs “Successful organisations, use both ecolabelling and robust metrics to inform and communicate performance to their stakeholders, but conventional ecolabelling is no longer enough”.

“Companies and stakeholders need both labelling and data on the sustainability impacts of products to access key markets that are demanding both easy consumer recognition as well as real metrics to integrate into management and corporate reporting but also address green procurement processes.

The evolution of integrated ecolabelling and enhanced Life Cycle Assessment methods now make that accessible to all companies,” says David.

Where once pass/fail ecolabels were sufficient, consumers and other stakeholders now seek performance ratings and real data at levels of detail that suit their needs.

Sometimes the same organisation can need simple forward facing sustainability consumer communication and then more detailed information to communicate product life cycle benefits to forward thinking companies.

David adds that: ‘Product Labels and Scorecards fulfill some of these needs but LCA reporting via Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are now required in specific sectors, where reporting now also needs different thinking to conventional Life cycle impact Analysis because circular economy characteristics necessitate Life Cycle Benefit Analysis (LCBA).

Such ‘Beyond LCA’ strategies are needed by sustainability managers to address LOHAS (Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability) markets and link product sustainability data to professional users’ procurement, corporate performance and company contributions to circular economy reporting.’

David Baggs Keynotes At International Event For Sustainability Week In South Africa

David Baggs,  GreenTag’s CEO and Program Director  is delivering a keynote address this week in South Africa for the African Capital Cities Sustainability Forum,  hosted by the City of Tshwane for Sustainability Week.  David’s keynote is titled ‘Visualising the Circular Economy Using Life Cycle Analysis’ for the technical program Vision Zero Waste Seminar on June 2.

With focus on design for waste minimisation and recycling,  David has been invited to deliver the keynote in the context of a vision for zero waste in South Africa. The seminar comes at a critical time, organisers say, when waste streams are at an all-time high, where some communities are without waste services and landfills are reaching capacity.

David brings hoped for solutions.  He will be focusing on the circular nature of the mindset required to reduce the impact of waste – and how this is possible through LCA centric design.

“Conventional thinking is stuck on damage and loss,” says David.

“From a Global GreenTag perspective, I shall be offering clarity about the terminology used in the area of Life Cycle Analysis thinking and how it naturally applies to a circular economy mindset and sustainable solutions for ecological regeneration.”

David is also presenting two other seminars at Sustainability Week.

Steven Claridge is a valued member of Global GreenTag’s National Advisory Committee (NAC) on Building Products.

Steven  is also State President of the Building Designers Association of Queensland and Director of BEDI – Built Environment Design Institute of Australia.

Steven has worked in the Building Design field for over 15 years, developing a distinctive Queensland design style. The Asia Pacific Space Designers Alliance are proud to announce Global GreenTag as a Green Partner for the inaugural Australian iteration of the Asia Pacific Space Designers Alliance Congress.

GreenTag looks forward to partnering and building with the Congress sustainability approaches for the Australian event in September in Adelaide.

The Congress will provide delegates with the opportunity to network with their contemporaries in the region, provide a forum for alliance members and congress attendees to be able to showcase their work, and a unique learning environment focussed on all design disciplines featuring in the region.

The Congress aims to explore the theme of ‘Home’, stating:

WELL – A Big Call For GreenTag Products

eToolLCD and Global GreenTag Form unique Partnership

Life Cycle Assessment Software provider eTool joins forces with Global GreenTag  to raise the benchmark on sustainable building and certified green products for the construction marketeTool screen grab

For the first time in Australia, Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) data from Global GreenTag’s LCARate certified products with Environmental Product Declarations, (EPDs) will be available directly in the eTool product life cycle data library and identified by brand.

This means that the brand specific LCA information for products will be right there at designer and LCA consultants’ fingertips when they need it.

GreenTag recognised by Singapore’s Green Mark International

Green Mark

Global GreenTag has been formally recognised by the Singapore Building and Construction Authority as a product certification scheme for the purposes of projects using the Green Mark International® (GMI) green project rating tool in countries where GreenTag is recognised by the Green Building Council or Government agencies.* The GMI tool is used extensively by projects outside Singapore in ASEAN countries like Malaysia, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and African countries such as Tanzania.

All GreenTag certification is recognised to meet the Green Mark Materials Category, ‘Sustainable Products’ credit. The recognition of GreenTag by the Green Mark International® rating scheme adds to the other international rating tool recognition including the Malaysia Government’s own GreenTech Corporation and their MyHIJAU program, the EC3 EarthCheck® program operating in Tourism, hospitality and Exhibition sector in over 70 Countries, as well as Green Star® in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. GreenTag Environmental Product Declarations, or EPDs are also compliant with the EPD requirements in the USGBC’s LEED v4® rating tool that operates in over 140 countries.
